Freya Please

Architecture student Freya Please knew that Oxford Brookes was for her as soon as she paid us a visit. Before her tour, she had been considering other options. "I was really impressed with what I saw and I've never regretted coming here for a minute."

Freya made her mark on the Architecture School from the word go. When the request went out for a first year representative, she shot up her hand. The fact that Brookes prides itself on student involvement in university affairs appeals to her. "I like being involved and wanted to find out how the Architecture School worked." By her third year, she was School Rep, and involved in major decision making, such as selecting the company for a new rebuilding project.

Freya, who grew up in Cheltenham, has always wanted to be an architect, and remembers that she started drawing houses when she was five. She loved doing artwork at school, and says everything all fitted together when she came to Brookes. She believes that the course has given her the chance to express her personality and develop her own interests, especially around children. She had organised a reading group for local children when she was in her 6th form, and at the age of 17 travelled to Romania to volunteer in an orphanage.

"I have been back three times. The buildings there are so bad, I just want to redesign the whole place. People are living in 1950s apartment blocks that are falling apart. It would be great to be able to do something for the children out there." One thing that stands out for her about her course it the way it has succeeded in integrating art based architecture training with technology. "There are computers everywhere, too, which is great. And the tutors, they're absolutely superb, that is one thing that is special about Brookes, I think."

Freya's future plans now include getting married, and returning to Brookes – in that order! "I will definitely be coming back for the Diploma. Looking further ahead, I would like to get involved in regeneration work, and perhaps specialise in urban design."
