Design Tutor, Freelance architectural designer
Maija studied at Dundee School of Architecture in Scotland and graduated with distinction from University of East London in 2013.
Prior to becoming a freelancer, Maija practiced at David Kohn Architects, who work internationally on arts, education, residential and urban design projects. Her work at DKA include New College Oxford, providing student accommodation and facilities for the adjacent school.
Projects experienced at Karakusevic Carson Architects include a masterplan in Hackney Wick, which was the winner of the New London Award 2016 in Masterplan and Area Strategies category, and the redevelopment of the Kings Crescent Estate involving the delivery of the first two phases of the masterplan with 269 new homes and 101 refurbished homes.
In her work Maija is concerned with the topic of the continuum of the city, a cycle of growth and reuse of the urban fabric of buildings. She believes in a city where places of living, work, leisure and industry exist side by side.
Rather than being driven by desire to specialise in one singular sector Maija’s work is underpinned by a strong belief in the creative design process. Her long standing delight in craft and tradition has developed into a fascination for materials and construction techniques in a cultural context. Amongst her interests lie a concern for the representational and emotional effect that architecture can have through its physical presence, materiality and tectonic expression.
In addition to her practical and teaching activities Maija likes to practice photography and the craft of book binding. She has been responsible for creating exhibition materials at both UEL and Dundee degree shows and also runs book making workshops.
