MPhil student awarded RIBA scholarship

School of Architecture MPhil student Mick Scott has been awarded the scholarship in 2013 in order to support his MPhil in the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University. His research deals with the development of spatial and environmental resilience strategies towards conflict transformation and resistance in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Mick completed his Part 1 studies at Queen's University Belfast and Part 2 at Oxford Brookes University, where he is undertaking the MPhil with the aim of transferring to a PhD. Alongside his academic studies, he works at Berman Guedes Stretton Architects.

"I am delighted to have been selected as the 2013 recipient of the RIBA Aedas Stephen Williams Scholarship; receiving this support means a great deal to me, and I look forward to developing my research with the assistance of the RIBA and Aedas over the coming year."

He describes his research as dealing with sustainability and its manifestation as resilience in contexts affected by climate vulnerability, conflict, poverty, and economic duress. Arguably sustainability is the first ideological architectural movement since modernism to challenge how we fundamentally live beyond aesthetic considerations and in certain places sustainable/resilience based architecture has evolved into actual political resistance. The research investigates how the Israeli occupation of Palestine has pervaded such a scenario and how architecture and planning has been used to mitigate and contest the reality of life under the Israeli occupation.

RIBA President Angela Brady said:
"We are delighted to be able to award this scholarship to a really compelling candidate. Mick's work on the spatial and architectural nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is admirable, and we commend the direction of his research."

Chairman of Aedas Europe, Brian Johnson, said:
"In the past five years the RIBA Aedas scholarship has attracted some of the most talented students across the country. We are pleased to offer a scholarship that helps cultivate design and innovation and promotes engagement and education within the industry, all of which are paramount to Aedas’ ethos. We have seen a tremendous increase in design capability and talent and are impressed with Mick Scott's entry which presents thought provoking research into built environment areas rife with communal, social and human rights issues."

About the scholarship

The RIBA Aedas Stephen Williams Scholarship was established in 2008 thanks to the generous support of Aedas Architects and is offered in memory of Stephen Williams, a past Director of Aedas.

The Scholarship provides £5,000 to support one student for a period of postgraduate studies lasting up to 12 months in the UK or abroad. Aedas will also ensure that a representative from its staff is available to mentor the student throughout the period of their scholarship.

The scholarship, named in Stephen Williams's honour, serves as an appreciation of his tireless devotion to the profession. Stephen was a strong advocate for good design and thoughtful consideration of the built environment. Always committed to promoting education and further knowledge, the award serves to continue his legacy.
