Diploma in Architecture

The Diploma in Architecture programme at Oxford Brookes is unique among programmes offering Part 2 ARB/RIBA accreditation. In addition to design and the other subject areas specified by the ARB/RIBA, the programme also provides the opportunity for research by allowing students to select a special area of study from one of the five Masters programmes offered by the Department.

2011
Development and Emergency Practice

The award-winning masters degree in Development and Emergency Practice (DEP) provides a unique academic setting for the study of poverty, international development, conflict and disaster management. With its core emphasis on practice, the programme offers students the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes in the rapidly changing field of development and emergencies.

Humanitarian Action and Conflict - Online course for practitioners

Building on existing successful Masters programmes Oxford Brookes University and Université Paris Est-Créteil Val de Marne are offering a new three module online Postgraduate Certificate designed specifically for practitioners and field workers.

International Architectural Regeneration and Development

The inherited built environment, including vernacular architecture, must be recognised as a significant cultural and environmental resource and its regeneration an essential component of sustainable development. The combined processes of globalisation, rapid urbanisation, population growth, environmental change and technological developments have resulted in an increasingly complex and dynamic situation in which concerns about the meaning of cultural heritage and identity, the depletion of natural resources, the increasing gap between rural and urban areas, and the impacts of climate change continue to grow. This presents a significant challenge to professionals charged with delivering culturally and environmentally sustainable architecture to respond in a critical, dynamic and creative way.

2008
Shelter After Disaster

The quantity and severity of natural disasters are increasing as our planet struggles with climate change, population growth and conflict. The need for effective "shelter after disaster" – the provision of houses and homes for those affected – has never been greater. This programme is designed to develop reflective practitioners who will have an understanding of the practical and strategic issues of development and emergency practice as well an appreciation of the social and political context.

Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2011 Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2011

This School is committed to enabling the individual to flourish, and to producing a graduate who can work on the global stage. The reputation of the School is constructed on diversity of approach with open debate; we are committed to educating the designer who can envisage the future. Across all years you will see the culmination of students and staff working together to address complex and challenging projects.

Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2010 Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2010

Few things give a better guide to the state of studio culture in a school than the end of year exhibition – and if this year's exhibition is anything to go by, studio culture at Oxford Brookes is flourishing. What to me is striking is not just the quality of the work but its diversity, with exquisitely crafted hand drawings and maquettes – architecture as fine art with a capital A - jostling alongside strategies for tackling urban deprivation in the UK and for promoting development in South African townships. While some (but not many!) schools can match Oxford Brookes in terms of quality of output, none I think can match us for the sheer diversity of student achievement.

Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2009 Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2009

From first year undergraduate through to masters and PhDs, the school seeks to engage with the issues that face architects not just today, but over the coming 30 years. The pages that follow present some of the work that resulted and that was on show in the 2009 exhibition. If you were not able to come to Oxford to see the exhibition, I hope you will join us next year – and see for yourself the range and vitality of what the school is doing.

Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2008 Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2008

Welcome to the Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2008, which showcases some of the student work carried out during 2007-08. The year has seen a further expansion of the activities of the school, with eight Vertical Units in the BA and six DS studios in the Diploma. The introduction of new units has further enriched the diversity of the educational experience provided by the school. This has been reinforced by the re-shaping of our studios. Two large studios now accommodate students from second to sixth year in a learning environment where students learn from one another as much as from their tutors...

Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2007 Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2007

Welcome to the second edition of the Oxford Architecture Yearbook, which showcases student work carried out in the 2006/2007 session. Included is student work from all levels of the department – the undergraduate studios, the Diploma/Masters studios and programmes, and the research degree programme, as well as the RIBA Office-Based Examination. This year has seen a number of exciting innovations at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. Two new Masters programmes (also available to Diploma students) were launched, the M.Arch in Advanced Architectural Design and the MA in International Architectural Regeneration and Development (IARD)...

Welcome to the Oxford Architecture Yearbook 2006. The yearbook showcases some of the student work carried out during the 2005/2006 academic year – including undergraduate studios, Diploma and Masters studios and programmes, and research degrees – and also gives a snapshot of our research and other activities, as well as the work of the RIBA Office-Based Examination candidates. Oxford Brookes was recently named by the 100 leading architectural practices in the UK as the best architecture school outside London and the number two school overall. Looking at the work presented here it is not hard to see why our graduates are so highly regarded...

Designing Practice for a Virtual World

IT has been one of the most powerful phenomena to emerge in the twentieth century. It has had an impact on domestic and commercial activity on a global scale. The social, cultural, political and economic circumstances in which architecture is created is evolving at a rapid pace. Architects cannot escape this context and must consider how they make adjustments in future to their methods of interaction with others in order to harness IT for the benefit of themselves, their clients and the creation of the built environment.
